What the classes cover

The organ is not a piano β€” it's a different instrument entirely

Everything that makes piano technique work β€” weighted keys, touch sensitivity, sustain pedal β€” doesn't apply to the organ. Organ keys are unweighted, sound sustains as long as a key is held, and the feet have an entire keyboard of their own. It requires a genuinely fresh start.

🦢 Pedalboard technique from the start

The 32-key pedalboard is central to organ playing β€” not an optional extra. We start students on independent pedal lines early, building toward full three-part hand-and-foot coordination.

🎹 Manual registration

The organ has no touch sensitivity. Expression comes from registration β€” choosing which stops to draw and combining them musically. Students learn the logic of principals, flutes, reeds and mixtures as part of the core curriculum.

βœ‹ Legato without a sustain pedal

Organ legato is produced entirely by finger technique β€” keys held precisely and released exactly as the next sounds. Students from a piano background must unlearn the pedal habit and rebuild legato from the fingers up.

🎼 Repertoire: sacred, classical and beyond

Organ repertoire spans J.S. Bach to Widor, Anglican hymn-playing to French symphonic organ. We choose repertoire suited to each student's background and goals.

Grade pathway

ABRSM β€” your grade pathway

ABRSM has a full organ examination pathway from Initial through Grade 8. We'll advise on exam session timing and preparation at the enquiry stage. Students who already hold ABRSM Grade 6+ on piano are well positioned to move through the organ syllabus quickly.

What to bring

Bring your sheet music and a metronome to class.

Church organ readiness

Church organ playing is one of the most natural applications of this course. We cover both classical and liturgical repertoire, and students who complete a full organ course are equipped to play for services.

The instrument

Viscount 3-manual organ β€” a serious instrument

FSG owns and teaches on a Viscount classical organ β€” a full three-manual instrument with a complete 32-key pedalboard. This is not a home keyboard with organ sounds. It is a serious instrument modelled on classical pipe organs.

🎹 3 Manuals (Great, Swell, Choir)

Each manual has its own set of voices and its own dynamic range. Advanced technique involves playing across all three simultaneously.

🦢 Full 32-key pedalboard

The pedalboard spans the bass register and is played with the feet. Most organ music requires fully independent pedal lines alongside both hands.

πŸ”Š Authentic organ tone

Viscount's tone generation is modelled on classical pipe organs. Students learn on an instrument that accurately represents what they will encounter in churches and concert halls.

πŸ“ Rare in Bangalore

Very few institutions in Bangalore offer organ tuition on a proper multi-manual instrument. Formal tuition with a full pedalboard organ is genuinely unusual here.
